Sam Alito has a long one on the appellate bench.

Because of that, he could not kow-tow to what he no doubt sensed different senators wanted of him - often simply to be a clone of the distinguished jurist he will replace, Sandra Day O'Connor.

To his credit, Alito made no effort to please, only to inform.

He is, as he said, his own man with his own set of beliefs and convictions and his own generally distinguished and highly respected service to the Constitution.
