In a study led by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, the overall prevalence of erectile dysfunction in the United States was found to be 18.4 per cent among all age groups, with 77.5 per cent of men aged 75 or older reporting the condition; just 6.5 per cent of men aged 20 to 29 were affected. In a second U.S. study, which involved men referred for heart-related stress testing, University of Chicago researchers found that patients with erectile dysfunction were more likely to have heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. Stress test results also suggested a high risk for cardiovascular disease. "Erectile dysfunction is a stronger predictor than traditional coronary heart disease risk factors in this population,'' the authors write. "Sexual function questioning may be useful to stratify risk in patients suspected to have coronary heart disease. Further studies are needed to establish whether patients with ED but no cardiac symptoms should be screened for overt coronary heart disease.''
