As for the kidney cancer drug Nexavar, which was launched in the US recently, Plischke said he still expects approval in the European Union in the second half this year.

Media reports have suggested the company expects the drug to post sales around 30 mln eur this year, but Plischke said: 'It will be significantly above that,' although he said it would not run to three digits.

Bayer currently has eight pharmaceutical products in phase III clinical development and three projects in phase II.

Finally, there are twelve projects in phase I and another eleven in pre-clinical development.

However, Plischke said Bayer is always on the lookout for drugs to license in.

'We are working intensively to license in new products,' he said, although he would not be more specific as to when this will happen.
