Sex in the golden years: Yes, seniors, the dangers are real

...The need for intimate contact, and the newfound ability, drives many seniors to bars, social mixers — even the Internet, where they can meet other singles in the same demographic.

"I hear about one night stands," says Melissa Jones, "And I groan." Jones manages the Three Oaks Banquet and Catering center in Bonita Springs, where she hosts weekly singles dances for seniors on Sunday nights.

"It's not a meat market," she says, "But that doesn't mean some people aren't looking for that.

I always tell them to think before they act." Her office door is always open, she says.

"Any time someone needs to talk about dating, sex or relationships, I'm there," she says.

But for the most part Jones doesn't offer advice, "I'm very cautious, I know my place," she says.

"Most people come here to meet friends or start long-lasting relationships." Plus, Jones says, there are many who come to the dance and they have zero interest in talking about intimate relationships.

But older adults can't take all the blame for being shy about talking about sex, says one sexual educator.

"Assisted living and senior centers just don't want to face the issue," says Peter Bright, director of programs for Island Coast AIDS Network in Fort Myers.
